Symptoms of a Cracked Tooth

It is not always easy to tell if a tooth is cracked just by looking at it. Often, the only way to actually see the damage is to use one of our advanced microscopes. However, other signs include:

  • A tooth suddenly becomes sore or extremely sensitive
  • There is sharp pain when biting down
  • The enamel looks darker or more grey

Why Does a Cracked Tooth Hurt?

A cracked tooth hurts because it enables bacteria to reach the interior nerve of your tooth, exposing it to pressure and temperature it’s not acclimated to. This nerve is part of the pulp, or soft tissue inside every single tooth. It’s the reason you can feel your teeth despite them seeming like pure bone on the outside.

How Is a Cracked Tooth Treated?

If your general dentist suspects that one of your teeth is cracked, they will refer you to our office. Here, we will perform a detailed exam, which will involve taking a lot of images of the tooth so we can see even the smallest, discernible crack.

After we have determined the location and extent of the crack, we will perform root canal treatment to get rid of the infection tissue (and associated pain), and then your general dentist will restore the enamel with a custom-made crown (you’ll be fitted with a temporary one in our office in the meantime).

Tips for Preventing Cracked Teeth

  • Always wear a mouthguard when playing sports, even non-contact ones!
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools for opening packages or bottles
  • Be mindful when biting into tough or hard foods
  • Ask your dentist about a nightguard if you grind your teeth while you sleep
