Endodontic Microsurgery Deerfield

Trusted Expertise for Advanced Cases

The most advanced dental infections not only present a threat to individual teeth, but also to the nearby jawbone as well as the body as a whole. Oral health affects the entire body, plus any bacteria that originate in the mouth can easily enter the bloodstream and travel to other parts. MeTa Endodontics uses endodontic microsurgery, also known as an apicoectomy, to protect our patients’ smiles and health at the same time. Our expertise and track record are such that many general dentists in the Deerfield area and beyond refer their patients who need this procedure to us because they know they’ll be in great hands.

What Is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a type of dental surgery used to remove an infection that originated in a single tooth, spread to the root, and has now broken through and reached the jawbone. The procedure involves removing the infection and damaged tissue as well as closing the root (“apex”) of a tooth to prevent complications down the road.

How Does an Apicoectomy Work?

  • Referral: Working hand-in-hand with your general dentist, we’ll make your visit to our office seamless, ensuring we know who you are, why you’re here, and have all your clinical information so we can get straight to providing relief.
  • Exam: While we’ll already have a lot of information about your situation from your dentist, we’ll still perform an exam and take images so we understand what is going on concerning your dental infection.
  • Treatment: An apicoectomy involves a few basic steps:
    • The treatment area is completely numbed
    • Sedation is provided to ensure the patient feels comfortable (optional)
    • A small portion of gum and bone around the root of a tooth is removed to expose the infected area
    • Damaged tissue is removed, and the area is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized
    • The tip of the tooth root is sealed off
    • Self-dissolving sutures are used to close the treatment area

Our team will give you step-by-step instructions to follow so that your recovery is nice and smooth. Fortunately, you won’t be asked to do anything intricate. The instructions primarily involve taking any pain medication as directed, sticking to a softer food diet for a few days, and making slight adjustments to your oral hygiene routine in the days following the procedure. Our team and your general dentists will ask you to come in for follow-ups as needed to make sure everything is going according to plan.
